There are 38 teachers in the Department of English Language
and Literature. Among them, 11 are professors and associate
professors, and 70% of them have master’s degrees.Teaching
tasks of this department are divided into 2 parts: English majors
and college English of all students on campus, including those
for doctor’s degree, master’s degree and bachelor’s degree,
which totals more than 10,000 students.Recently, we have achieved
a lot in reforming our teaching methods and improving our teaching
quality.
In college English, we got 90% Passing rate in National
English Examination Band four in 2003 and 2004, which are 20%
higher than other colleges and universities, and this brought
great honor to our university. In College English Teaching, we
renewed our teaching concepts, consistently improve our teaching
methods and got excellent results.
Firstly, students’ grades are rapidly improved by teaching in
different levels. And in the recent years, “ the passing rate
of College English Test Band Four at one time” is 8 % higher
than other national key colleges and universities. Secondly,
much attention is paid to the training of students’ compound
abilities. For 3rd and 4th year students and postgraduates,
we impart knowledge of some related courses, especially that
of mass communication.Along with this, we offer some optional
courses. Lastly, we try to take advantages of our campus to
create an environment to improve students’ interests in learning
English. We set up English Corner, Radio CUC and organized English
Speech Contest, Chinese and Foreign Song Singing Contest, English
Writing Contest and other activities, such as performances of
English plays.
DELL invested heavily in pedagogical researches and has
achieved considerable success. Nearly every faculty member publishes
one or two academic essays on the English languages and literature,
pedagogy or related subjects every year, some on prestigious
national academic journals. The department also puts a lot emphasis
on career development of young faculty members, many of who
have been pursuing further studies and/or receiving mid-career
trainings.
Teachers in the department are encouraged to employ interactive
multimedia methods in their teaching, which are not confined
to the conventional classroom. Every lecturer is armed with
a notebook computer and is skillful in manipulating computers
and computer networks in information exchanges.
