Department of International Communication was founded
on the basis of the former English program and the International
Journalism program. The department offers programs for bachelor’s,
master’s and doctor’s degrees and is dedicated to training future
journalists with a good command of the English language and
a strong footing in journalism and international communication.
Its graduates can be found in all major national news organizations,
foreign news media, government agencies, domestic enterprises,
and multi-national corporations.
Department of International Communication currently offers
four undergraduate programs: 1) International Journalism, 2)
English Broadcasting, 3) Foreign Theater, Cinema and TV Literature,4)
Internet English Information Collecting and Editing. Core courses
can be categorized as five major themes: 1) English Listening
and Speaking, 2) English Reading, 3) English Writing, 4) Translation,
5) English Broadcasting and Film and TV Translation. Students
of the four programs take all core courses and required course
and can choose from a number of elective courses. These courses
include but are not limited to Journalism Overseas, English
News Writing, News Editing and Translating, Advanced News English,
International Communication, Communication(Theory),Reporting
to Overseas Audiences, Newscasting, Broadcast News English,
Cross-cultural Communication and Television Production.Department
of International Communication faculty members’ research level
is becoming higher and higher.
Every year Department of International Communication
faculty members publish academic papers and books which are
well received in the academic circles. Among the recently published
academic books are International Communication and Foreign
Propaganda, International Communication and Media Studies and
International Journalism and Cross-cultural Communication.
Among the recent course books edited by Department of International
Communication faculty are Broadcast News English, Advanced English
Video and Reading and News English and Media Studies. Through
years of its efforts, Department of International Communication
has brought together a faculty of highly competitive, committed
and experienced researcher-instructors.
Every year Department of International Communication
encourages its students to participate in contests on and off
campus.The department designates experienced faculty members
to coach students in major national English contests: the “21st
Century Cup” National English Speaking Contest, CCTV Cup
National English Speaking Contest and the “Foreign Languages
Teaching and Research Press Cup” National English Debate Contest,
to name but a few. From these contests, Department of International
Communication students have gained many important awards,
gaining honour for BBI and for Beijing.Many Department of International
Communication graduates working with national or international
broadcasters have enjoyed an evident edge over their peers.
Some of them are: Chen Luyu and Chen Xiaonan, celebrated anchorwomen
with the Hong Kong Phoenix TV; Shen Jianing, political reporter
with the CCTV; Cao Ri, English Newscaster with the CCTV; Duan
Xuan, CCTV sports reporter; Zhu Hua, hostess of the CCTV’s
English Magazine: Outlook; Ji Xing, CCTV anchorperson. Outstanding
Department of International Communication graduates play an
important role in China Radio International, Shanghai Satellite
TV, China Daily and many other frontiers of the nation’s communications
with the rest of the world. A number of Department of International
Communication graduates have won the nation’s top journalism
awards.
To meet the nation’s increasing demand for foreign languages
media professionals, in 2001 Department of International Communication
started its undergraduate program in English Broadcasting and
in 2003 started its undergraduate program in Film Translation.
At present, Department of International Communication
students, faculty and staff are making greater efforts to help
increase China’s exposure in communications in the world.
